Don't Let Your DIY Project Become a Don't Top 5 Tips for Doing It Yourself

Common sense and planning ahead go a long way in making your do-it-yourself project a success. Learn what the experts have to say about helping your DIY remodel go smoothly.

Tooling Around

Before replacing your kitchen or bathroom faucet, make sure you have the right tools to do the job correctly. In addition to a Phillips screwdriver, adjustable wrenches and plumber's putty, you'll need: pipe tape, a flashlight and safety glasses for the kitchen faucet; and new supply lines and a basin wrench for the bathroom.

No Water, Water Everywhere

You may be impatient to start the installation of your new faucet, but don't forget to turn the water supplies off before removing the existing faucet. Next, turn the faucet on to relieve water pressure and to ensure the water's completely off. Then, disconnect the supply lines from the shut-off valves.

Remodel Project...or Research Project?

Pick up a few home improvement catalogs for design ideas, or stop by the library and check out some books. Make sure you take the time to actually read them, because skipping a few steps or overlooking details can result in a disastrous and expensive experience.

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions

Imagine this scenario: you have small, stand-up shower in your bathroom and you're more-than-ready to remodel. Are you looking for a spa-like experience, complete with remote control? Or will this be more of a place to grab a quick cool rinse after a workout? Depending on the main purpose or function of your new bathroom, your options for design are practically endless.

It's Not a Mistake...It's a Learning Experience!

Mistakes are bound to happen, but don't let them discourage you. After all, this DIY project should be a fun learning experience. If you do get stuck, don't be afraid to call in a professional for a free consultation. You don't actually have to hire the person, but getting a free opinion can help point you in the right direction.
